If others can do it, so can we; to set up a Truth Commission to serve reconciliation

Continuing my efforts to introduce a Truth Commission in Cyprus, I have put forward concrete proposals as one measure to make headway towards reconciliation.

I outlined my ideas before an audience during a panel discussion on “Seeking Peace in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean: Negotiations and Alternative Diplomatic Paths”, hosted by EUROPolitika, in Turkish occupied Kyrenia on Friday 20th September, I propose to upgrade the CMP into a bicommunal Truth Commission, which would be a forum to express remorse and provide information about missing persons and give immunity to those who give information leading to the discovery of the missing.

To this end, I suggest to amend the CMP terms of reference, the 1981 UN General Assembly resolution and the Evidence Law. In addition to this, internal regulations should be set up to enable the Truth Commission to operate smoothly.

The CMP terms of reference at present do not provide for an explanation as to the cause of death, which is a major shortcoming, and this must change.

“There are still 958 persons missing (759 Greek Cypriots and 199 Turkish Cypriots) and their families need answers. The state has to respond to this need.”

Truth Commissions have operated in other conflict areas around the world, such as South Africa and Colombia.

“If they can do it, why not us in Cyprus?”
